SURGERY

Wound Site Care

To ensure a well-healed wound, these instructions should be followed:

  • Keep the area dry for at least 24 hours.

  • Remove the bandage the following morning after your shower.

  • Apply a small amount of Vaseline ointment (or Polysporin if you don't want to use Vaseline) to the wound and cover with a Band-Aid. Repeat this every day after your shower

  • Do not leave the wound open to air or let a scab form. This will delay healing. When taking a shower, please leave the Band-Aid on the wound so direct water does not hit it.

  • If you had stitches placed at the time of biopsy, return as directed to have them removed.

  • Continue wound care until healed. The healing process can take 1 to 4 weeks. It is normal for biopsies on the legs to take longer to heal. If you have any problems or questions, please call 407-866-1213.

Bleeding

If there is excessive bleeding, apply pressure for 20 minutes uninterrupted. If bleeding fails to stop, call us at 407-866-1213. If on the weekend/after hours, please go to the closest urgent care or emergency department.

Activities to Avoid

Avoid any activity or movement that may cause the wound to stretch or may place tension on the wound for 2-3 weeks after the procedure. This will help prevent the wound from opening or widening over time. Sutured scar tissue lines will not reach their full strength for 6 months.
